Walking the Memory Walk 2021 for my Mum
08 March 2021
Saturday, 20 March. That's when I'm doing Memory Walk 2021 for my Mum Brenda. And to raise a few pennies for a great charity.
It would have been her 90th birthday this year. Sadly, Mum passed away in 2017 after suffering from senile dementia for many years.
It started very slowly. The signs were there that things weren't right. Strange little 'turns' Mum swore were nothing. Forgetting things, getting confused and disorientated. Gradually, it sucks the life out of those we care about in the most undignified way. Like so many charities right now, Alzheimer's Society is literally desperate, and I mean desperate for funds to help support people who suffer from this wretched disease. We saw Mum slowly fade away from dementia till there was literally nothing left of her in the end. In these unprecedented times, now more than ever I believe this is the moment to show our support for their fantastic work.
This picture of Mum and me was taken in 2012 when she was so excited to watch the Olympic Torch being carried through Callow Hill, next to the Wyre Forest. It was the year after Dad passed away, but it was a happy day. This was before the dementia took hold. It's how I like to remember her, happy, laughing, drink in hand! We'll be walking the Wyre Forest in Mum's memory and it'll be great to have your support.
Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia. That's the equivalent of around 225,000 people every year. By taking part in Memory Walk you are helping us walk for a dementia free future and help people affected by dementia. Once you donate, JustGiving will send your money directly to Alzheimer's Society. So it's the most efficient way to raise money, saving time and cutting costs for the charity. Let's take on dementia together.
